Old Fashioned by Rene Gutteridge

Old Fashioned (book)
Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to turn an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town....and to purse lofty and outdated theories on love and romance. But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can't help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love.

 They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an "old fashioned" courtship?

My Old Fashioned Review

Ladies, I want to warn you up front that this is one of those books where you have to pace yourself. If not, you'll get behind on the house chores. Do a chore and reward yourself with another a few chapters. {You can't read just one chapter at the time!} The dishes won't get done and neither will the laundry unless you have mastered the skill of reading while loading and unloading the washing machine and dryer with one hand. {Luckily, I have that don't pat.}

The Moral of the Story....
There are several things that I like love about the Old Fashioned book and movie! I love the fact that not only is the story well-written and entertaining but, the moral of the story itself makes for a great reason/purpose/cause to read and/or watch Old Fashioned. I appreciate that the writers and directors took the time to create such a great love story that is not only sweet, funny, and a great story overall but,  that it is a story that promotes true love- not lust, even in this day and time when much of society no longer sees the value in courtship, chivalry and purity. And, best of all, they did so by creating a book and movie that is well-written, modest and doesn't include foul language, smut scenes and nothing that would keep you from recommending it to the preacher's wife.

Let me be the first to say that I have read all three books of Fifty Shades of Grey any enjoyed them, however it's not something I would choose to bring up at the family reunion with Grandma sitting at the table or at the next choir banquet. However, Old Fashioned would be a great recommendation and still be an appropriate topic. It's just as good, if not better, without all the X-rated hype. {Ladies, you get the idea- family friendly blog here so I won't go into too much comparison. However, it is worth noting that the book is just is good, if not better, and yet- it's still family, faith and G-rated friendly!}
I enjoyed the fact the Old Fashioned represents normal, every-day people. Just an average man and woman in a small town, both with a few skeletons but nothing majorly complicated or overboard. No billionaires or college babes here... well, not for the most part.

And, this may sound a little odd but, I really like that they used actual images of the characters and scenes from the movie to create the book cover. Why does that matter? you ask... because I hate getting an image in my head of awesome characters just to watch the movie and them be totally different then what I expected. Thanks to the cover coordinating with the movie, I was able to read the book and watch the movie and be able to feel just as connected with the movie and the book. Hey, I admitted at the beginning that was odd... but that's just me.

Writing Quality
The quality of writing for Old Fashioned was fantastic. I love a good book that is perfectly written to the point that the descriptions and adjectives pull you right into the scene to the point that you can smell the fresh dew on the ground, hear the leaves crackling in the wind and hear the barn door creaking. In this case, you can also smell the fresh saw dust in the antique shop. Yeah- Old Fashioned is one *those* kind of books.

Old Fashioned Way Devotional

The Old Fashioned Way Devotional
Contrary to popular opinion, being "old fashioned" doesn't mean you're dull or unromantic. In fact, a true old fashioned relationship can be more exciting and romantic than anything you've ever experienced! So what does it mean to do things the old fashioned way? Sure, it means opening doors, holding out chairs, and taking things slow. But a true old fashioned romance goes much, much deeper than that. Inspired by the motion picture Old Fashioned, this book will show you how to reclaim the lost art of romance by introducing you to romantic love as God intended it.

Regardless of your past mistakes, where you've been, what you've done, or where you are now, you can find and create a love that will last a lifetime! As you work your way through this forty-day journey of inspiring readings and questions for reflection, you'll discover all the unique and amazing benefits of doing things the old fashioned way. And before you know it, you'll be well on your way to creating a love story for the ages.

My Review of Old Fashioned Way Devotional

It's no surprise that after enjoying both the book and movie, Old Fashioned, that the Old Fashioned Way Devotional would be just as good. Since I'm already married and plan on staying that way, I wasn't able to fully utilize it in my personal life in general but, I did see where it would be very useful for anyone who is currently dating, looking to date, or just wanting to start a new life after a divorce, and is looking for inspiration, encouragement and Christian values related to dating.

Each day the devotional addresses a new topic or area to focus on in relation to dating in a Godly manner that both addresses common questions and concerns associated with how to live a faith-filled life and following God's will while also finding your soulmate.

Unlike some devotionals, this one isn't written like hardcore preaching or self-help guide. Instead, it's more of an inspiring, encouraging devotional that teaches you how and why it's important to for your to take your time and truly fall in love, not lust. I highly recommend this for anyone trying to find their true love and the happiness that God has intended for them. Not just because they want to be loved but, because they deserve to have someone who will love them back with their soul and not just their eyes...
