Preservation Society Home Preserves: 100 Modern Recipes by Camilla Wynne | A Modern Canning Cookbook

If you are looking for a great canning cooking book or preserves cookbook that doesn't include the typical recipes you would find online, then you must grab a copy of Preservation Society Home Preserves: 100 Modern Recipes, by Camilla Wynne. But I must warn you, this is not the same recipes you will find in your heirloom cookbooks or online. Instead, they truly are unique canning recipes that you probably won't find elsewhere, using both traditional and more newly discovered ingredients such as buckthorn.

Lets face it, 95% of most canning cookbooks, have the same or similar recipes,which is one reason I am so excited to share my Preservation Society Home Preserves: 100 Modern Recipes review! After I finally took a leap of faith last year and started canning veggies for the first time, I now want to approach jams, jellies and more great canning recipes. 

{I mean after all, if I managed to get this far and not kill-off the family with botulism then chances are I didn't do too bad!} 


When I signed up to review this book I assumed it would have a canning recipes for some of the old fashion jams and jellies, but I was wrong--- way wrong! When they say MODERN RECIPES, they mean MODERN! You won't find a typical strawberry jam or peach preserve in this cookbook. Instead, you'll find adventurous recipes that you most likely won't find in your grandmother's canning cookbook, or on your favorite canning sites for that matter.

Author Camilla Wynne is the founder of Preservation Society, a very particular preserves company. Camilla has worked with some of the top chefs throughout Canada and North America and her experience is reflected in her recipes. Using classic recipes and adding a surprising twist, the recipes listed in this canning cookbook are still easy and delicious, even for beginners.

Some of the modern canning recipes you will find in this cookbook include:
  • Pina Colada Jam
  • Peach Passion Jam White Grapefruit Marmalade with Vanilla
  • Famous Apple Chutney
  • Apple Compote, Rhubarb-Style
  • Jalapeno Jam
  • Dilly Green Beans Pickled Brussels Sprouts 
Keep in mind, this is only a few of the 100 modern canning recipes you will find in listed in the book. As you can see, Preservation Society Home Preserves: 100 Modern Recipes includes yummy recipes for more than just jellies and jams. You'll find recipes for butters, pickles, veggies, beans and flavored syrups and concentrates. You will also find several great recipes in the back of the book for using these tasty preserves to make cookies, marshmallows, truffles and so much more.

If the list of ingredients listed in each recipe don't get your mouth watering, the beautiful pictures definitely will! The book is filled with gorgeous images that will inspire and bring out your inner-canning-creativity.

As for the style and printing of the cookbook itself, I was very happy with the design and layout. The recipes are formatted with an easy-to-read layout that is also easy to understand and follow. The book is well-bound, includes a thick, glossy cover (great for easy cleanup in messy kitchens) and the pages are made of thick quality pages to insure they last for many years to come. Definitely a well-made cookbook that you will be able to pass down through generations if properly taken care of.

Overall Preservation Society Home Preserves: 100 Modern Recipes is much more than I thought it would be. Unlike the common recipes you'll find online, forums, canning groups and family cookbooks, this one include a combination of great recipes that incorporate a variety traditional and modern ingredients for fun and unique flavors that are sure to be a hit with family and friends.
