Pressure Cooker Boiled Peanuts! How to Cook Peanuts in an Pressure Cooker

Nothing says SUMMER quite like boiled peanuts!

Until recently, I loved to eat them but didn't like cooking them because it meant heating up the house with a large pot of boiling water and babysitting them for hours to make sure they didn't boil over or run out of water. We would also cook them outside on the fish cooker but with 100+ degree heat index, who wants to sit outside in the sweltering heat while next to a cooker? Not me!

Luckily, I've found the perfect way to boil peanuts faster and easier and usually in 30 minutes or less!

I tried my hand at this recipe after my family was wanting boiled peanuts. Since I had just bought my new Power Pressure Cooker (which I L-O-V-E), I thought I would give it a try for cooking a quick batch and it turned out almost perfect the firs time I tried it. I initially set the cooker for 30 minutes and ended up having to add another 5 minutes due to use very large peanuts. I recently cooked a batch that was using smaller, standard size peanuts and they cooked up perfectly in 32 minutes.


How to Cook Boiled Peanuts in the Pressure Cooker

  • 2-3 lbs green peanuts (not dried. Dried will require extra time or soaking overnight)
  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • Water (enough to cover peanuts completely)  
  1. First, I like to put about 2-3 cups of hot water in the pressure cooker, add the salt and stir until dissolved. This is not required, but I do it to ensure the salt doesn't pile up on the bottom of the cooker and stick.
  2. Next, wash the peanuts and drain off excess water and place in the pressure cooker.
  3. Add water to cover the peanuts at least an inch. Do not go over the max-fill line. It's important to never overfill your pressure cooker to avoid damaging the cooker, altering the cooking process and making messes.
  4. Next, pressure cook peanuts for 32-35 minutes at 15lbs or 70 ksi. If you are using smaller peanuts then you may want to reduce it to 30-32 minutes and check for doneness. They will continue to cook as they cool and you can always boil them for a few more minutes without pressure if need be. As with any recipe, you can always continue to cook if needed but you can't un-cook if it's over done. (ksi is the pressure settings used on electric cookers. It is also the default setting for all of the ones I have seen so far.)
  5. Once the peanuts are done cooking, let the pressure release naturally. (If you are using a stove top pressure cooker turn off the stove and carefully move the pot off of the hot burner. Don't rush this process this is where the salt and other spices you may have added will soak in, adding tons of flavor!
  6. After the pressure has naturally released and the cooker is safe to open, remove the cover and stir the peanuts well. Remove one or two peanuts and allow them to cool and check for flavor and to ensure they are done to your preference.

    Not Salty Enough
    If they are not salty enough, let them continue to soak in the cooking water. As they cool, they will soak up the salted water and any other seasonings added. I typically let mine soak about an hour after they are done cooking. Sometimes longer, depending on the size. It's all in preference. Whatever you do, don't panic and add a ton of salt. The peanuts will not even begin to soak up the salt or other spices you added until they begin to cool. The longer you let them sit in the water they more flavorful they become.

    Not Done
    If the peanuts are not done enough for your preference, you can can either pressure cook them a few minutes longer (if you are in a hurry), or simply turn your pressure cooker on to a non-pressure setting such as the browning or soups and stews setting for another 10-20 minutes or until they are done to your liking.
  7. Once the peanuts are done and perfectly salted to your preference, carefully drain them and put put in a Ziplock bag or bowl with a lid. 
  8. Now, for the best part... enjoy 
Storing Boiled Peanuts

Once you've got your belly full, make sure you store your boiled peanuts in the fridge in a food-safe container or Ziplock bag. They will last up to a week in the fridge or, you can divide them up into separate bags and place them in the freezer for a salty snack later.  When you are ready to eat them again, simply heat them back up in the microwave or boiling water for a few minutes. They are awesome!

I'm sure by now you have heard the latest craze about electric pressure cookers. Mine has been amazing... both of them! I had originally bought my step-mom the Power Cooker Pro a few years ago because I had no idea what to get her and it seemed perfect since it was so many appliances in one... it's a pressure cooker, canner, slowcooker, rice maker, and more, in one convenient little machine.  Shortly after, my best friend purchased one and she loved her's, too. So, I hopped on the bandwagon and bought myself one. *So glad I did!*. 

Then, after we were all getting used to the Power Cooker Pro, they came out with the Power Cooker Pro XL, which is larger and has a few more settings. My parents surprised me with one for my birthday! So now, I have two. And yes, I use them both, often!  

If you haven't gotten yourself one yet, or don't know much about them, I strongly suggest you check them out! Unlike the old fashion pressure cookers that your grandmother had these have many safety valves, plugs, locks and other safety features to keeping them from becoming missiles in the kitchen!  (You know the big metal one with the hisser on top that you were not allowed to go into the kitchen when she was using because it was dangerous!) And, not only are they safer, they include many small appliances in one simple machine and are a breeze to clean up!

Food Storage 101 : Where and How to Keep Your Food Properly

Food storage is as important in any kitchen as food handling, and knowing where to properly place your ingredients can help reduce your kitchen waste and help you save money, too. You’ll also be helping the environment by doing so. Additionally, proper storage is vital for food safety, and improper storage is as much to blame for cross contamination that happens as a result of food poor preparation.


The kitchen and dining area certainly has plenty of spaces where your food items can be stored. But if you’re still unsure about correct food storage, follow this guide:

The Refrigerator

The temperature of a high-quality refrigerator remains generally constant, so it’s the perfect place to store ingredients and food items that cannot be kept on the counter top. 
Meat that you intend to consume within 4 days, as well as fish that you plan on cooking in 2 days, can be kept in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Meanwhile, pies that contain eggs should be covered and stored in the refrigerator, along with certain herbs and yeast.



The Freezer
In the freezer, you’ll want to keep the items that can spoil when not kept in very low temperatures. These include your meats, fish, frozen stock, pies and pie crusts, cakes wrapped in plastic wrap and then tin foil, citrus zest, and coffee, among others. Do mind how long they’re being kept in the freezer, though. Also, make sure that they are properly kept in containers that prevent their juices from leaking.





The Pantry
Here you’ll want to keep your spices and nuts, which should be stored in air-tight containers when possible so that they will be able to maintain the right moisture level. Dry good are also stored in the pantry, and they can generally last for up to six months unopened - sometimes even longer, depending on the best before date printed on them. Once opened, though, the contents should be transferred to an air-tight container to ensure its freshness, and might need to be stored in cooler temperatures, such as those in the refrigerator or freezer.



The Counter
Alliums such as onions, garlic, and shallots can be kept on the counter provided that they’re stored in a cool and dry place. Fruits such as bananas and melons, vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, and winter squash can be displayed out on the counter. Additionally, you can also keep bread, cakes, and pies out unless they come with specific instructions to be kept in the refrigerator.


An important thing to remember is that storing food in the right temperature can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, which can cause illnesses when ingested. To be very certain about correct storage, you can also check the label on the food item. By correctly storing the stuff that you eat, you’ll not only be taking care of your health, you’ll also be saving money and lessening food wasting.

Oh, man! I wish I would have known about the Jillian Michaels app last year when I was working out and lost 40 pounds in 5 months! I couldn’t afford a personal trainer so I researched and tweaked, and put a lot of sweat and tears (literally) into getting the right combination of workouts, meal plans and my routines just right. This program could have saved me a LOT of guesswork and I may have been even more successful… But, it’s never too late to start, right? I'm Back! Oh, How I Have Missed You All!

Ok, everyone, I'm back!

And, more excited than ever! And, oh boy, I've got some great posts in the works that I know you guys will love!

So Where Have I Been?
Unfortunately, it has been several months since I have had a chance to post and, for several reasons. From health, to spending time with family, to selling our house and moving and all the way down to d-i-v-o-r-c-e.... The last few months have been hectic. But, I am happy to say I am finally to a point where I can get back to normal! And I am so excited to be back!

I have missed you guys and gals so much! Both the my readers and fellow bloggers. It's amazing the virtual family you create online and how close you get to them. 

With all that said, I am thrilled to be putting together some great new posts, including some fabulous healthy recipes! Last year, I lost 39 pounds in about 5 months by eating healthy (which is a huge challenge when you don't eat veggies!). I also credit my success to a great app which I'll tell you more about soon and, I hope some of you will join me there! I  know several of y'all are like me and have New Year's Resolutions for getting healthy and I will be sharing some of my favorite recipes, workouts and successful ways I went from a size 16 to a size 10 in a few short months- the healthy way! And, no it wasn't a "diet". If I can do it, then I know you can, too! So hang around cause there's more info to come in the next week!
